Ajmer Sharif
Dargah – A Sacred Shrine of Sufi Devotion
Khwaja
Moinuddin Chishti arrived in India from Persia around the 12th
century and eventually settled in Ajmer. His teachings of
love, compassion,
tolerance, and service to humanity earned him followers
from all walks of life, regardless of religion, caste, or
status. After his death in 1236 CE, a tomb was built at the site
where he was buried, which over time developed into the
sprawling shrine complex known today as
Ajmer Sharif Dargah.
Spiritual and
Religious Significance
Ajmer Sharif
Dargah is not just a religious site—it is a powerful
symbol of communal
harmony. Devotees from across the country and
abroad—both Muslims
and non-Muslims—flock to the shrine seeking blessings,
peace, and healing. It is believed that the
prayers offered with
pure intention at the Dargah never go unanswered.
One of the most
spiritually moving experiences at the shrine is the
qawwali—devotional
Sufi music performed in the courtyard, often bringing visitors
to tears. The dargah becomes especially vibrant during the
Urs festival,
commemorating the death anniversary of the saint, attracting
lakhs of pilgrims.
The
Dargah complex is a beautiful example of
Mughal architecture,
with additions made by several rulers including
Emperor Akbar,
who was a devout follower of the saint. The main features of the
complex include:
-
The Nizam Gate:
Donated by the Nizam of Hyderabad, this is the main entrance
to the Dargah.
-
The Shahjahani
Gate: Built by Emperor Shah Jahan, this gate leads
into the inner sanctum.
-
The Buland Darwaza:
A majestic gate that marks the entrance to the actual tomb
area.
-
The Marble Dome:
The tomb itself is covered by a white marble dome,
surrounded by a silver railing and a gold-plated canopy.
-
Degs (Cauldrons):
Two huge cauldrons are used to prepare
langar
(community meal) for thousands of visitors, a tradition
started centuries ago.
-
Courtyards and
Mosques: Including Akbari Masjid and Sandal Khana.
The
dargah is not only a place of worship but also a sanctuary of
art, music, and culture, where
Sufi traditions
are kept alive.
